Madurai Marathon 2011 - More than 30,000 participated

Climate change is posing serious threat to lives and livelihoods of millions of people around the globe. Given the anthropogenic impacts on the environment, we are currently witnessing unpredictable disasters like drought, flood, cyclone and others.

The poor and marginal communities in countries like India are more prone to risks and vulnerabilities posed by the Climate Change. Lack of adequate coping strategies to fall back on further aggravates the problem.

Run for a Cause This event targets the youth through the schools and colleges, to sensitize them on the cause. We find the student fraternity's support for this event to be amazing. Almost all the schools in Madurai participate besides college students. Though not a competitive event the spirit of the participants to run for the cause creates great impact. Each year around 20,000 students participate in the event.	Half Marathon The only sporting event in the total scheme of events is the Half Marathon for 21 kms. The event is organised separately for men and women providing an opportunity for 1000 sport persons to compete for cause rather than for prize money. The volunteers extend their support for the successful conduct of the event.	Walk for a Cause The public of Madurai express their solidarity for the cause through '*Walk for a Cause*'. Each year 20-25,000 people from various walks of life including women SHG members take part in the event. They walk a distance of 5-6 kms inside the city raising slogans related to the cause with placards and banners. The city wakes up to the clarion call given by the public and the cause is truly highlighted.
Dignitaries Led Walk The event aims to bring all the dignitaries of the city voice their support for the cause. All the members of the Madurai Corporation Council, Heads of educational institutions, industrial houses, members of social organizations, leading members in the medical fraternity, philanthropists lead ordinary citizens in this walk for a distance of 2-3 kms. This walk is expected to strengthen the work undertaken by different stakeholders for the cause.	Differently Abled walk What would be more gratifying that a group of differently abled walk for a social cause that too a 'health cause'. This event brings differently abled people of different age group walk a distance of 1 km to symbolize their support for the cause. Undoubtedly their plea has had tremendous response by way of support to the cause	How you can support As part of the Marathon 2011 we aim to renovate community ponds, plant horticulture saplings which will provide green cover as well as support the livelihood of farmers, farm ponds to support the livelihood of poor and marginal farmer, Community solar systems to support families without access to electricity.
