It comes under the Ulaiyur Panchayat of Mudukulathur block in Ramanathapuram district, Tamil Nadu. The total population of this village is 300 and they live in 40 families. The occupation of the people here is agriculture and they cultivate rice, chilly and cotton as rainfed crops. Status of Drinking Water in the VillageThere are three ooranis in this village namely Konaiyadi kaali kovil oorani, Maruthar udaiyar kovil oorani and Ull oorani. The Konaiyadi kaali kovil Oorani is 1 km away from the village and is the main source for drinking water in the village. The oorani has got silted up and the water stored in it is inadequate to meet the needs of the people. This oorani provides water for only 7 months in a year and during the other times, the people travel to other neighbouring villages to bring water. The remaining two Ooranis are small and are used meet their domestic water needs and for livestock. There is one tap in the village, the water from it is slightly saline and not suitable for drinking. Even this water is not available if there is power cut. The scarcity of drinking water is a major issue for them. Way Forward and Expected BenefitsThe people are ready to renovate the Konayadi kaali kovil Oorani to meet their drinking water needs. They want to increase the storage capacity of the Oorani. They have formed a village association for this purpose. They are ready to contribute 25% of the costs of the renovation of the Ooranis and have already started the work of mobilizing the contribution. They would take the responsibility for the maintenance of the Ooranis in the future on their own. Before Construction
Villagers Speak Before Construction...“The last time we took water from the Kaliamman temple oorani was after the rains in March. If we renovate this oorani properly we will not suffer from want of water. Even if the oorani is situated a distance from the village, it is more important that water is available not the distance. “We have only one pipe in our village. If there is a power cut, there will be no water even for days. I could not go to school at proper time because I have to bring water. The pipe water is not fit for drinking as it is salty. Drinking water problem is the major problem here. If the oorani is excavated, we will get good drinking water in our village itself. “” After Construction
Villagers Speak After Construction...“Smt. Tamil Selvi says ……..the most benefited segment of this work is women in this village. We were struggling hard to bring water in time for cooking and other domestic needs. Now with this oorani anyone can fetch water at anytime for the home needs and we don’t have to go far in search of water.” Donors visiting the Oorani
