Salur (PAN IIT)

Salur village in Salur panchayat, Thirukazhikundram block, Kancheepuram district, has two hamlets – the village and the colony. There are 98 households with 470 people (234 males and 236 females). The proposed oorani, traditionally called oothukuttai (which means a structure that stores water from natural springs), is in Salur colony, 8 kms from Thirukazhikundram town.
The IIT, Chennai alumni visited the oothukuttai on 27 June 2005 and met the villagers several times thereafter to decide on the work needed.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

A household survey and focus group discussions assessed the total drinking water demand. The survey shows that other than the oorani, a hand pump and a bore well in the tank are the only drinking water sources. The total drinking water demand each day is 806 pots (around 9.672 cu.m.). Hence it was decided to dig the oorani to a depth of 3m so that it could harvest 2,700 cu.m. of water which in two fillings would store about 5,400 cu.m. Allowing for seepage and evaporation losses of 40 per cent, the oorani could still provide 3,240 cu. m. for nine months. This, as you can easily calculate, is more than the need.
The survey showed that the bore well was inadequate to meet the demand. Hence, it was decided to rehabilitate the oorani that could serve 140 households.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The Salur Oothukuttai Vayalagam, a farmers’ association with 114 members, was formed on 15 August 2005 and a bank account opened on 27 August. By the end of August, the oorani work began. The villagers deposited their contribution of Rs. 49,368 in the vayalagam account in installments. On 16 September 2005 Rs. 2 lakh donated by alumni of IIT, Chennai was also deposited for the oorani work. Thus the total funds available was Rs. 2,49,368.
After 10 October 2005, monsoon began. The work stopped as the oorani filled with water. Till date, the oorani has been deepened and the draw well work has begun. For the work so far, Rs.1,04,578 has been spent. The balance is in the association bank account.
