Maruthanganalloor

Maruthanganallor is located on the Kamuthi road and 10 km away from Mudukularhur belonging to the Anaiyur Panchayat in Ramnathapuram distirict of Tamil Nadu. The village has a population of 3000.The villagers are dependent on agriculture and allied activities like charcoal making and livestock rearing.Paddy, Chilly and cotton are the major crops of this village and are rainfed crops. The Kings of Madurai used to stay in this village during their return on their trips to Ramnathapuram. So this village was called as Maru thangal oor (Place to take rest during the return). People belonging to two communities live in unity without any conflicts.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

This village has one irrigation tank for agriculture and one oorani which meets the domestic water needs. These two water bodies were renovated in 1999 with the support of DHAN Foundation. Two years back they got a new oorani with the support of the government for drinking water. The capacity of the three water bodies is insufficient to meet the needs of the present village community. The people have to depend on the surface water only as there is no scope for using the ground water. During the good monsoon periods the rain water fills all the water bodies in this village quickly. But the water lasts only for six months due to the low capacity of the existing ooranis. For the remaining six months they have to travel 2-3 kms to other villages like Karunkulam, Kadambankulam and Iluppaikulam. When there was severe shortage in the nearby villages the people brought water through tankers and distributed to the villagers for Rs2/- per pot and they limited to only two pots for a family.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The people are keen to renovate all the three water bodies in their village at the same time. They are ready to give 25% of the total cost as their contribution. They feel it will give very good impact as three major problems they are facing will get solved at one time and it will give them the freedom to concentrate more on their livelihood activities. The village has a strong association and they have already done collective work and will take the responsibility for the future maintenance of the ooranis and the tank.
