Samipatti

The village Samipatti belongs to Perayur Panchayat in Kamudi block of Ramnathapuram district in Tamil Nadu. The population of the village is around 910. Almost all the villagers are very poor and they belong to the Scheduled Caste. The village is located in the interior and remote area. The bus facilities are infrequent and the village lacks most of the basic amenities.

Agriculture and goat rearing are the main occupation of the people in this village. The agriculture is rainfed and is supported when there is good rainfall by a small tank which has a command area of 25 acres.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The villagers depend upon the tank for all their domestic water needs and for the cattle. This creates a lot of conflict between the farmers who want to maximize the water for agriculture and the villagers who want to use it for their other needs. Since there is no oorani for drinking water the villagers they have to go two to three kms to the nearby village of Mettupatti. The women and children have to spend two-three hours every day to fetch water. An oorani would have not only met the drinking water needs of the villagers but also their need for domestic water when the tank water is used for agriculture. This would reduce the conflicts in the village because of water.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The villagers have made several representations to the various government agencies to get their problem resolved in some way or the other. But their efforts so far have been in vain. They have now resolved to come together to create a new oorani in their village which will solve their problem. They are ready to contribute 25% of the total cost as their contribution for the oorani. They have formed a Villagers Association for taking up this work.

Villagers Speak Before Construction...

“We are badly in need of an oorani to meet our drinking water needs. It will save the women and children a lot of time and energy spent in just fetching water. It will put an end to our misery of having to struggle everyday to get water for drinking and domestic needs”
