Kamalapuram

Kamlalapuram is located five km southwest from Vilathikulam town of Tuticorin district in Tamil Nadu. There are 360 households in the village of which 10 are huts, 180 are tiled houses and the remaining 170 are concrete houses. The total population is around 950. The rainfed farming is the most common livelihood in the village. Sheep and goat rearing and dairy activity also found as a profitable supplementary livelihood to many of the families in the village.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The village is having two hand pumps, several stand pipes getting water supply from Vaippar River, an open well and two Ooranis. The village is getting the water supply from the Vaippar river water supply scheme only up to March. The village usually faces a severe drought during the months of April to July. Harvesting and holding the north east monsoon rain would serve the drinking water needs to the village around the year. It is equally more important to protect the harvested rain water to ensure quality in the drinking water. Currently the villagers are unable to check the entry of cattle into the oorani in the absence of fencing. The occurrences of water borne diseases are common in this village, which siphons off major portion of the hard earned income of the poor households.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The fencing of drinking water Oorani leaving the other Oorani available for livestock and domestic purpose would help the villagers to have a safe drinking water assuring better health. The village people would be organized in to an association to take up the work. The entire work would be implemented manually by the villagers. The Oorani Association formed in the village would mobilize 25 percent of the total work cost as contribution from the villagers either by way of cash or contribution through labour. The ownership shown by the villagers would help in execution as well as future maintenance of the structure.

Kamalapuram Oorani before our intervention

Villagers Speak Before Construction...

“A woman in the village confesses “We are drinking the Oorani water even after knowing the water not safe. We have no other go. We are completely depending on this Oorani water during summer. There are days we and the animals take water for drinking side by side in the Oorani. We do not know what health hazards it is going to bring to us, unless we really check and bother about our health. We definitely have to fence the Oorani to protect the drinking water.”
