Senkottaipatty

Senkottaipatty is remote village located about 18 km away from Kamudhi and 13 km away from Mudhukulathur town. The village located in Peraiyoor Panchayat of Kamudhi block in Ramanathapuram District. All the families living here belong to scheduled castes. The village has no proper road and bus facilities, and the infrastructure is very poor. The history of the village points out that the people from Senkottai in Thirunelveli district in southern Tamil Nadu migrated and settled here long back during a communal riot. This is evident from the fact that the people of this village still visit and join for the temple festivals in Senkottai. Malattaru is a rainfed river flows during rainy season and reaches the sea without of much use to the people or for farming is running a km away from the village. There are about 320 families with a population of 1400 live in this village. The village has scattered settlement type. There is a primary school and the students move to the nearby towns like Kamudhi, Mudhukulathur and Paramakkudi for higher studies. Temporary migration is noticed here, some of the families are involved in charcoal making. Farmers involved in intensive agricultural activities and they cultivate paddy, chilly, cotton, and black gram.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The ground water is available at a depth of 250 feet, but water is highly saline in nature. There are two Over Head Tanks constructed on the bund of the Oorani. In 2000, an Over Head Tank was built by Panchayat and connected to ten taps. Two bore wells were installed on Malattaru to pump the water to the Over Head Tank. It served the bathing, washing, and other domestic purposes to the people. The bore wells dried up and the system is not functioning currently. A bore well with ground level water stagnation tank was installed by a voluntary organization, which is saline presently fulfills the water needs for bathing, washing, and domestic needs. A small pond near the Oorani is also used for bathing. Drinking water is a highly felt need of the village. In 2005, Narippiyoor – Desalination plant (to convert the sea water into drinking water) connected to street taps provided water and ceased to serve the people continuously. The village has only one Oorani named Kaliamman Koil Oorani, which is located in the center of the village. This is the sole source for drinking water. Absence of fencing allows the animals to enter into the Oorani and polluting water. Lack of fencing and draw well to ensure the quality of protected water forces people to travel to near by village named Mettupatty, 2 km away to fetch drinking water.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The Kaliamman Koil Oorani gets water from the catchments of nearby agricultural field and holds water for 6 months during rainfall season. The Oorani’s present condition is not good enough to serve water requirement of the entire village people. The villagers want to renovate the Oorani by deepening the pond and strengthening the bund. The fencing needs to be repaired with screwed type wire robes to prevent the animals entering the Oorani. A draw well with filter mechanism to access protected drinking water is the urgent need of the village. The villagers are very enthusiastic to take up the work and preserve the structure for long use. They are much need of a helping hand to resolve their drinking water issue. The people would contribute 25 % of the cost of the project through cash and/or labour and hold the responsibility to care and upkeep the structure.

Villagers Speak Before Construction...

“Fetching drinking water is one of my routine works. Here women, youngsters, and school going children go to Mettupatty by walk as well as by bicycle with 3 or 4 pots to bring water. In 2003, even we traveled to Peraiyoor for 5km to fetch water. Now the Oorani is serving our need. A draw well in the Oorani would rescue us from water born diseases........ Mr. Palthurai, a villager.”
