Thekkur

This Thiruvelikudambam oorani is located in the Thekkur village. It is a small hamlet in Manamadurai block of Sivagangai district in Tamil Nadu. This village is located 3.5 km southeast to Mannamadurai town, and embraces three different caste people, contributing to a population of around 270.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The Oorani in the village is situated about 750 m from the hamlet amidst a good catchment zone. The oorani is presently deepened by the village laborers under National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme by availing 100 days of employment. As such, the scheme does not have a scope for the construction of fences, approach steps, ringwells, and inlets to the deepened oorani. The oorani as such cannot be prevented from pollution by livestock and stray animals and is in serious need for renovation. The water is unable to be diverted from the nearby tank, and for only three months water will stay within this oorani after the rains. Though the oorani is rarely filled, the people of Thekkur village always allow nearby villagers to take as much water from the oorani as needed. The present drinking water supplied from an overhead tank from the Panchayat is intermittent and inadequate.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The village is therefore seeking the support of DHAN to provide well designed filters attached to a ringwell and approach steps along with the fencing on the periphery of the oorani. A renovated oorani with the proposed scientific and technical improvements sought by the villages will definitely improve the water quality and the availability to water throught the year for the villagers.

Villagers Speak Before Construction...

“The women from the nearby village say that at the time of our visit, they hadn’t bathed in 8 days due to no proper water access. When the oorani is restored, we will finally hear the long awaited sigh of relief throughout Thekkur as the village can continue the age old tradition of properly revering Lord Alagar, as well as having regular access to water.”
