The Pallar community hails in the hamlet and hence the name Pallamor Kulam came into being. Again this hamlet being very proximate to Gulf of Mannar coast at a distance of 5km has salty groundwater. This hamlet has 135 households with a population of about 650. Status of Drinking Water in the VillageThe existing oorani, which lies in the western direction of the hamlet, does not have a fence or adequate storage in the well. Obtaining water from water traders is not always viable as a pot of drinking water costs Rs. 2.50-3. Furthermore, the government, under the DPAP program, implemented infrastructures during 2002-2003 at the cost of Rs. 16 lakhs that are not much used for meeting the villager’s needs. For these reasons, the villagers, especially women, struggle to get drinking water. Due to the saline nature of the groundwater, the available options of the villagers are quite limited; they can only construct a new oorani. Since the government has already invested Rs. 16 lakhs through the drought prone area program (DPAP) in the hamlet, the possibility of additional allocation for their demand is far remote. Way Forward and Expected BenefitsA new oorani for the socially backward community of this village will be a boon. Moreover, the social capital of villages organized under the vayalagam tank association will be empowered to execute the construction work of the new oorani with the managerial input of the technical experts of DHAN Vayalagam Tank program will fulfill their parching throats. A new life could be seen by the smiling faces of women and children once the new oorani comes no sooner than later. Before Construction
Villagers Speak Before Construction...“Mr. Thangaraj, 52 years old, a vayalagam farmer leader said that a oorani with sufficient depth, inlet, ring well, leading channel from good water catchment, and protected fencing would finally turn their lives around for the better.” “Mr. Thangaraj again recalls the struggle of people especially during the summer to fetch drinking water from the nearby big village of Anaikudi situated 2km away.” “” Budget
Over the above budget DHAN Foundation contributes Rs. 50,000 by providing professional and techno managerial support to the community. |
