Moonjan

Six to eight months out of the year, there is hardship for the people of Moonjan village, as there is no water available in the oorani. Children and women have to walk at least 1km to the nearby village of Kovalan Chatram to fetch water. Moonjan village is a small hamlet made up of mostly the Pallar (SC) community. Moonjan has about 60 houses with a population of 320.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The story of the present Oorkavalar oorani itself highlights the very high requirement for drinking water in the absence of good quality groundwater. The villages had purchased 2.5 acres of land from landowners hailing from Uthirakosa Manga. Mr. Oorkavalar led the collective action of construction of this oorani about 10 years before as a physical laborer before his death. This oorani is named after him. The Rural Development department had renovated this oorani during 2003-2004 and put a filter and ring well in it through a private contractor, but in a subsequent scheme, the filters were dismantled and the existing depth of the 3 feet deep oorani is inadequate for meeting the village’s water requirement. At the time of water shortage, the villager’s used to pump the water from the irrigation tanks to this oorani. There is a borewell within the hamlet but provides drinking water only during the monsoon. After the monsoon the borewell water turns salty. In the absence of adequate depth, approach steps, and fence, the present oorani cannot be trusted in terms of safe water quality.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

The villagers plan to improve their ailing oorani with new structural alignments and the cleaning of leading channels to the oorani which will help the villagers livelihood to a great extent. With a renovated oorani, women and children do not have to bear the difficult burden of walking daily to obtain drinking water for their families.
