Ponnakaneri

The Village Ponnakaneri consists of 170 house holds belongs to a single community. It has a total population of 720. Agriculture is the major occupation of the village. Paddy, Chillies and cotton are the common crops grown here. Paddy is being grown for family consumption. Instead, chillies and cotton are grown for providing income. The village has a literacy rate of around 60%. Since from 1950, the village runs an association in the name of their caste. It bounds the people as a unit. It does the activities like regular meeting, organizing public works, and problem solving between the households.

Status of Drinking Water in the Village

The village has a tank and an Oorani to supply water for farming and drinking respectively. The tanks and Ooranis are the traditional water harvesting structures formed across the slope. The structures get filled during rainy season and supply water when it is required. The government has installed two bore wells, which were not under use. The tank/ Oorani were not capable of storing more water due to heavy siltation. During summer, the villagers used to face acute water shortage which results in migration. Fetching water from nearby villages was the major job of women folk and school going girls. The fencing of the drinking water oorani is in damaged condition which allows the animals in to the drinking water. Due to that the water getting polluted. This oorani requires earth work and fencing work.

Way Forward and Expected Benefits

Oorani deepening will increase the water storage capacity and ensure availability of drinking water throughout the year. Fencing will control the water pollution and people will get good drinking water.
