Ensuring safe drinking water is one among the activities of the Vayalagam Tankfed Agriculture Development Programme. Oorani rehabilitation is one approach of providing water to the villagers in some of the working areas. Apart from oorani water, ground water (hand pumps, bore wells etc.) is another major source of drinking water. These two sources are contaminated in many ways and are unfit for drinking when compared to the Public Health Standards.
Oorani water is superior in all aspects of water quality except for turbidity and biological pollutants. The community uses the raw water from ooranis with limited home treatments such as filtering with cloth, coagulating the sediment and making it to deposit/settle down with certain seeds, coagulants etc. Those home treatments do not even bring down the turbidity level to acceptable public health standards. The ground water is also contaminated in many places by biological organisms due to improper maintenance of the surroundings. The biological pollutants have immediate effect on health. Even if many of the local people have built up immunity from the use of water, the children, pregnant women and elderly people are likely to be affected by consuming that water. Hence the Bio Sand filters are installed in households that make the oorani and ground water to meet the standards of the Public Health Department
which is also a cost effective simple method.
