Vayalagam Movement was begun in Madurai on March 7, 2002 by the leaders of Vayalagams and Vayalagam Federations. It began as an offshoot of policy advocacy efforts of tank farmers at various levels. The aim has been to motivate tank farmers from different States in the country. By joining hands, they could speak out at national and international levels on conservation of small water bodies like tanks, ooranis, and farm ponds. Their desire to improve their capacity to manage the water resources motivated them to begin the movement. It is spearheaded by a group of leaders from Vayalagam Federations.

Vayalagam Jothi
As a token of appreciation for the benefits received, vayalagam members contribute Rs.10 each year. This amount is used for reaching out to other potential areas so that others too can enjoy the benefits.
Kanikkai Kudam
Kanikkai Kudams (pots) are placed at federations, meetings or at other important functions. The members contribute cash that is given to the poor or needy people.
Dhania Semippu Thittam (Storage of grains)
After harvest, farmers keep some grain for the poor. Sometimes the grains are sold and the amount is used for common village functions. This promotes unity among the villagers.
