The Vayalagam Foundation is a resource organisation in providing safe drinking water. The programme has made interventions in drinking water projects through rehabilitation of existing drinking water bodies such as ooranis and ponds in the rural areas. As a next step to provide safe drinking water, the programme has introduced Biosand Filters through collaboration with Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), Canada and DSM filter developed by “Water for life” Foundation, Netherlands. The two filters remove harmful pathogens in the drinking water. A separate centre called Water Expertise training Centre (link to water expertise training centre page)is also set up to provide access to safe drinking water.
Water Exerpertise Training Centre (WETC)
Water Exerpertise Training Centre (WETC) is set up to help communities get access to safe drinking water by undertaking various activities. The centre will increase awareness of the link between contaminated water and disease, the benefits of safe water, good hygiene behavior and ultimately better quality of life through the following activities.
Water Literacy: The centre will work towards creating awareness and action on safe drinking water by producing appropriate IEC (information, education and communication) materials in the local language to reach out to the communities highlighting the linkage between safe water, health and wellbeing.
Appropriate Technology and practices: The centre will work on identifying relevant methods and technologies for the access to safe water that are cost effective and culturally acceptable.
Water watch: Water watch is to educate the people about the importance of water quality and help them take efforts to improve the quality of their drinking water. Water watch plays a main role in assessing the drinking water quality in different contexts such as urban, rural, tribal and coastal areas.
