This festival is celebrated annually in the month of January or February during the post harvest season, when the full moon coincides with the poosam star in Tamil calendar month of Thai, at Palani, one of the six abodes of Lord Subramaniya. The pilgrims used to walk long distance to reach the temple. Thaipusam is celebrated throughout the world by ethnic communities from South India – in places like Chennai (formerly Madras) in India and Jaffna in Sri Lanka an important celebration.
