A Women of Determination - Sankaravadivu

I don’t have anybody, why should I save money for the future? This is the first question of Ms.Sankaravadivu while Kalanjiam approached her to join as a member of Thamarai Kalanjiam on June - 2015 in the newly promoted Sammatipuram location under WSI support.

Sankaravadivu, born in a poor family and got married as a second wife to an auto driver Mr.Thalathan. He has lost his first wife and has two sons and one daughter. Sankaravadivu after marriage got combined with her new family as if hers. Both the sons (teenagers at the time of her marriage) have become drunken and in few year moved out of the family. As a responsible mother and family head, she used her own 120 grams of gold for the marriage of her daughter. Till her marriage, the daughter is very caring and is affectionate with her. Once she got married with the jewels and financial support of Sankaravadidu, she got settled in her new family and didn’t pay a visit to her. As days passed her husband become a full time drunken, spending his earning for his drinking and other habits. So she felt being alone, this is why she raised “I don’t have anybody, why do I have to save money for the future?”

Sanakaravadivu is working as a housemaid in few houses and earn around Rs.6,000/- in a month. With this earnings, It is a challenge for her to fulfil even her domestic needs. However, she is bold and an embodiment of willpower to live in this society against odds. After so many rounds of discussion, she got convinced to join in Thamarai Kalanjiam and started saving Rs.200/- every month, and occasional additional savings as and when she could save more out of her small income.

Now, in the past 27 months, since joining Kalanjiam because of the WomenStrongMadurai initiative she has so far saved Rs.6700/- in her SHG. Before joining Kalanjiam she doesn’t have anything in the form of savings. Now, she is a regular saver in Thamarai Kalanjiam. She is persuading other poor women of similar condition to join in Kalanjiam and have savings on their own.
